Laptop Cafe: Remembering James Stinson (2nd September 2017)

Next month will mark the fifteenth anniversary of James Stinson‘s untimely death. Best known for his work with Gerald Donald as part of the duo Drexciya, Stinson left behind an extraordinary legacy of electronic music under numerous aliases across multiple labels – and it’s a legacy that continues to be unearthed and pieced together today, with Clone Record’s recent discovery and release of previously unheard Stinson recordings on the Laptop Cafe EP by Jack Peoples.

Stinson’s music has been incredibly important to me for a long time – in particular the wondering Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe album under his The Other People Place alias, whose influence I’ll freely admit to on much of my own music. I was keen to mark the anniversary of his death in a small way, so I’m delighted to announce that, thanks to our friends at the Pretty Decent Beer Co in London’s Forest Gate, I’ll be promoting a small listening event on Saturday 2nd September in his memory.

It’s a simple idea – from 7pm, we’ll be playing nothing but music from the Drexciyan universe – Drexciya themselves, Stinson’s various solo projects (The Other People Place, Lab Rat XL, Jack People and so on), and also music from Gerald Donald’s back catalogue including Dopplereffekt, Der Zyklus and Arpanet. Come and have a beer, have a listen and raise a glass to James. (Pretty Decent make a 15p charity donation to water projects around the world for every beer sold, which is pretty Drexciyan too when you think about it).

The Drexciya back catalogue is vast and wide-ranging, so if you’ve got a particularly prized item in your collection on LP or CD then bring it along and we’ll give it a spin. And requests ahead of time are welcome – indeed, encouraged! – so hit me up on email or Twitter.

There’s a Facebook event for the night here – please share among anyone who might be interested!

If you’re new to the world of Drexciya, there’s an amazing primer from RBMA here which is well worth a read.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Pretty Decent Beer Co, Arch 338 Sheridan Road, London E7 9EX
Saturday 2nd September, 7pm-11pm.

UPDATE 31st August 2017: We now have a Resident Advisor listing! Add it to your calendar there and share with friends. Also, many thanks to Stephen at Drexciya Research Lab for giving us a shout-out – exciting to hear that there are events in Manchester and Rome on the same night!
